Worker Incumbent Training

Incumbent worker training refers to the process of providing education and training opportunities to employees who are already working within an organization. 

The goal of incumbent worker training is to help these employees improve their skills, increase their knowledge, and enhance their job performance. 

This type of training can take many forms, including on-the-job training, classroom-based instruction, online learning, and apprenticeships. 

• To be eligible for IWT contract, trainees must have been employed by the business for at least six months.
• Trainees must meet the requirements for an employer-employee relationship under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
• Trainees must have an established employment history with the employer by the training start date.

Employer requirements for incumbent worker training include signing an Incumbent Worker Training (IWT) contract with the training provider and agreeing to pay a portion of the training costs. The employer must also identify specific job skills that need improvement and ensure that the training is relevant to the employee's job. Additionally, the employer must provide adequate time and resources for the employee to complete the training and apply the newly acquired skills on the job.

Covered costs and expenses for incumbent worker training may vary depending on the training program and funding source but generally include the cost of the curriculum, fees, textbooks, trainer fees, and other required training materials. In some cases, the employer may be responsible for a portion of these costs.

Uncovered costs and expenses may include transportation and lodging expenses if the training program is not offered locally, as well as training tools and equipment. Additionally, the employer may need to cover the cost of the employee's salary while they are attending the training, as well as any other costs associated with temporarily filling the employee's role during their absence.
